## Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1951 with the introduction of the Undergraduate Course in Mathematics. The postgraduate degree programme was started in the year 1964 and Stella Maris was the first women's college, conducting a postgraduate course in Mathematics. Under the affiliation of University of Madras during 1984 – 1986, the department conducted the sequential M.Phil. Degree Programme for the various college teachers.

The Department became a Research department in the year 1989 with recognition to guide both full-time and part-time Ph.D. Degree Programme under the University of Madras. An Additional section for B.Sc. Mathematics was introduced in the academic year 1993 – 1994 under the Evening College status to meet the increasing demand for the subject. M.Phil. Degree Programme was introduced in 2003 (both full-time & part-time), which became functional under the autonomous mode since 2005.

The Mission of the department is

- To develop in students logical thinking, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills
- To equip the students with more technical and technological skills and scientific computing techniques based on Mathematical methods to meet the growing demand in the industrial, marketing, communication sectors etc.
- To widen their horizon of knowledge with a focus on research
- To equip them with enhanced employable skills
- To offer at the post graduate level a wide array of mathematical approaches in a scientific computing environment to cater to the needs of teaching, research & industrial applications

The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, (under the scheme ‘FIST - 2006’) has sponsored and sanctioned Rs.22,50,000 for the establishment of the State of the art Computer Lab facility, for upgrading the mathematical software MATHCAD14 and for the purchase of books. It aims at introducing a scientific computing environment based on mathematical approaches to cater to the needs of teaching, research and industrial applications. The department organizes an Endowment Lecture every alternate year in the name of the former Postgraduate Head of the Department Dr. J. Thangamani ever since 1995.

The department celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2001; as part of the celebrations ‘Math Zoom’, an Intercollegiate Math cultural for all students of the city colleges (Arts & Engg.) was initiated. The department has also seen its Diamond Jubilee in the year 2012. A forum for the students ‘Integra’ was initiated in 2007 to enhance their knowledge in mathematics and improve their personal growth. Towards the end of the academic year the activities of the Forum culminates with an Inter-class competition MATH – O – MATCH.

The department is now a full-fledged research department with three research guides, Dr. Sr. Jasintha Quadras, fmm , Principal & Head Research Dept. of Mathematics, Dr. Felbin C. Kennedy, Associate Professor & Joint Secretary FIM, Dr. V. Jude Annie Cynthia, Assistant Professor with 10 research scholars pursuing their doctoral degree.
