Commerce

The Department of Commerce was started in the year 1985 in response to a growing demand for Commerce education.  In 1987 Ms. Leema Vanithakumari became the first Head of the department. To meet the growing demand for the subject, three more Sections were added under the Self-Financing Stream in 1993, 1997 and 2001. B. Com (Corporate Secretaryship) was introduced in 2010.

The Department aims at maintaining academic excellence and equipping students with the skills necessary to face the challenges of the business world. The undergraduate programme offers an innovative syllabus which caters to the varying needs of students. The Foundation Courses in Commerce place special emphasis on addressing real life business while the Professional and Skill Development Courses expose students to case studies and specific problems drawn from the Industry which serves as the backdrop for problem discussion and problem solving.

The main objectives of the Department are:
  • To keep pace with dynamic industry changes and management practices and to enhance knowledge updates through Technical Workshops, Seminars, Guest Lectures and Summer Projects.
  • To ensure that the curriculum maintains the connect between industry expectations and academia.
  • To facilitate e-learning by students in additional domain areas through shared Portals.

The Postgraduate Degree Programme in Commerce was started in the year 2004. The Core Papers focus on areas such as Finance, Marketing and Human Resources. Seminars, Workshops and Guest lectures are an important part of the learning process, while Internship programmes help students to obtain first hand information about the way in which a business concern functions.

The Business Line Club, a student initiative of The Hindu newspaper was inaugurated in 2006 - 2007 and is active in the College.

The Department of Commerce, Stella Maris College signed an MoU for a Student Exchange Programme with the IESEG School of Management, Lille Catholic University on December 24, 2007. Since 2009, three students from IESEG attend two semesters of study in the second year of the B.Com course each year.
