Bioinformatics

The two year M.Sc. Programme in Bioinformatics was started in the year 2002.  The Department was instituted under the headship of  Dr. Ordetta Mendoza, faculty, Department of Botany.  From 2005 - 2010 the programme came under the Innovative Programme of the UGC, and this enabled the Department to improve its infrastructure and engage in innovative methods of teaching and evaluation.

The programme gives its students a strong multi-disciplinary foundation in bioinformatics and includes job-oriented courses such as Data Mining, Clinical Research Management and Computer Aided Drug Designing.

The Summer Internship is an integral part of the course, and is done at the end of the first year. Students intern in reputed institutions all over the country such as IGIB, IBAB, NCBS and IISc. They are involved in the live projects of these Institutes, and acquire hands-on experience in handling commercial software, as well as training in work ethics.

The Project - which is done in the fourth semester - is mandatory for all students. The students choose their area of study and work under the guidance of the faculty.

The Department organises national level seminars and conferences and also arranges guest lectures by speakers from both academic institutions and industry.

The faculty and students are a part of the ongoing project of OSDD (Open Source Drug Discovery programme) which is an initiative of the CSIR. This initiative invites the scientific fraternity to collaborate in the discovery of new drugs for epidemics such as Tuberculosis, Malaria and so on.
