STRUCTURE OF THE UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMME

B.A. / B.V.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. / B.Com.(CS) / B.Com.(A&F) / B.B.A. / B.C.A. / B.S.W. / B.Voc.

(EFFECTIVE FROM THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015 - 2016)

The College follows the semester pattern requiring six semesters of study for a Bachelor’s degree, and eight semesters for B.V.A. The duration of each semester is 90 working days.

In the Choice Based Credit System each course offered in a semester is assigned a certain number of credits, depending on the quantum of work required of the student every week. At the Undergraduate level a student must necessarily complete a minimum of 149 credits for a Bachelor’s degree and 174 credits for the Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts.

Part I Language & Part II English are mandatory courses for all students.

Part III comprises Major Core, Allied Core, Major Elective and Allied Elective courses. For Major Elective courses, a student may choose between a subject related course or a subject related skill development course. Major Electives are offered by departments for students of their own and related departments. Allied Electives form a pool of courses offered to students of related departments.

Independent Study Courses

Students can earn extra credits by doing Independent Study Courses offered by he various departments.

In addition to Core courses a student is required to take courses under Part IV and Part V to obtain the minimum number of credits to graduate.

Students who have not studied Tamil upto Std X are required to take two courses in Basic Tamil of two credits each over two semesters in order to graduate.

B.Voc. Degree Programme

B.Voc. is a unique programme with multiple exit points. A student can opt to exit the programme at the end of the first year earning a Diploma or at the end of the second year earning Advanced Diploma or after completion of three years earning a B.Voc. Degree.

At the Undergraduate level a student must complete a minimum of 180 credits for a B.Voc. degree, 117 credits for an Advanced Diploma and 59 credits for a Diploma.

Postgraduate students require FOUR semesters of study to earn a Master's Degree. A student must necessarily earn a minimum of 91 credits for an M.A. / M.Sc. / M.S.W. / M.Com. Degree.

  RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

The one year M.Phil. Degree Programme is offered by the departments of Economics, English, Fine Arts, Mathematics and Social Work.

The Department of Social Work offers a part-time M.Phil Programme. The duratio of the part time M.Phil Programme is two years.
